Group AA Cross Country Meet Results

11/12/07
Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers Boys Cross Country Team as they captured the Group AA Cross Country Title!! The Millbrook Pioneers finished 4th in Group AA while the Sherando Warriors came in at 6th place.

The NWD girls were led by Brentsville as they finished 2nd with Millbrook pulling in at a close 3rd and Sherando finishing in 7th place.

Individually for the boys, James Wood's Josh Wilson finished 4th with Millbrook's Stephen Lassiter finishing 12th. For the girls, Millbrook's Presley Parkes cam in at 5th with Millbrook's Sullivan Parkes in 6th, Brentsville's Amelia Emerson in 8th, and Millbrook's Tammy Cheung in 13th.

Group AA Cheer Results

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they were crowned Group AA State Champions!!

The Tigers finished the final round with a score of 275.1. The Sherando Warriors finished 13th in Group AA with a score of 200.0. Region II Cheer made a strong showing overall with the Broad Run Spartans finishing 2nd and the Potomac Falls Panthers finishing 4th overall.

Group AA Cheer Information

11/9/07
The Group AA Cheer Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond. The competition start time will be 12:30 with the doors opening for TEAMS ONLY at 10:00. The public may begin taking their seats at 11:00. Admission is $7.00 per person.

The performance order is based upon Region Tournament results. Sherando will perform at 12:30 and Brentsville will perform at 2:35. The Group AA Finals will begin at 4:20.

By winning the Region II Cheer Title, the Brentsville Tigers are automatically invited to the Group AA Cheer Tournament. The next three highest finishers at the Region II Tournament (Broad Run, Potomac Falls, & Sherando) will also travel to VCU to participate in the Group AA Cheer Tournament.

General Information:
NO FOOD OR DRINKS WILL BE ALLOWED INTO THE SIEGEL CENTER.
School busses may park on Marshall Street if there is space available.
Spectator parking will be in the West Broad Street Deck diagonally across the street from the Siegel Center and the Bowe Street Deck, located behind the Siegel Center. The fee is $5.00 per car payable in cash upon entrance.
Group AA cheerleaders will sit at the left end of the gym. Seating for spectators will be designated on the day of the competition.
Spectators must receive permission from the tournament director for any live action shots taken of athletic events other than snapshots (VHSL Policy Manual 300-16-5). Tri-pods will not be permitted .

Region II Cross Country Meet Reslts

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they won the Region II Boys Title and congratulations to the Millbrook Pioneers as they captured their first Region II Girls Title. Congratulations goes to Millbrook's Presley Parkes who claimed the individual Region II Girls Title and James Wood's Josh Wilson who placed second to Region II Boys Champion Kyle Satterwhite (W. Albemarle).

In the boys race, the Tigers were followed by the Jefferson District Champion W. Albemarle, Sherando, and Millbrook. By finishing as one of the top four teams, Sherando and Millbrook also earned a berth in the Group AA State Meet. James Wood finished in 7th place, missing a Group AA berth.

In the girls race, Millbrook will be joined at the Group AA Meet by NWD Meet Champion Brentsville who finished 2nd in the region and Sherando who finished 4th. James Wood finished in 6th place, missing a Group AA berth.

The Group AA State Meet will be held at Great Meadow. The meet will be run on Saturday, November 10, 2007. The Girls Race will begin at 1:00 followed by the Boys race at 1:45.

 
 

Region II Cheer Results

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers and Sherando Warriors on advancing to the Group AA State Cheer Competition. The Tigers were crowned Region II Champions after defeating runner-up Broad Run, 3rd place Potomac Falls, 4th place Sherando.

The Group AA State Competition will be held at the Seigel Center on the campus of VCU in Richmond on Saturday, November 10, 2007. Sherando will perform at 12:30 with Brentsville performing at 2:35

The Region II Cheer Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Monticello High School. The competition start time will be 5:00 with the doors opening for TEAMS ONLY at 12:30. The public may begin taking their seats at 4:15. Admission is $6.00 per person.

The performance order is based upon district results.

By winning the NWD Regular Season Cheer Title, the Brentsville Tigers are automatically invited to the Region II Cheer Tournament. The next three highest finishers at the NWD Tournament (Sherando, James Wood, and Millbrook) will also travel to Monticello to participate in the Region II Cheer Tournament.

NWD Theatre Festival Results

10/29/07
Congratulations to the James Wood Colonels as they claimed their third NWD Theatre Festival Title in four years with a score of 284. By capturing the NWD Title the Colonels gain an automatic bid to the Region II Theatre Festival. Also, gaining a berth to the Region II Festival are the Sherando Warriors. Sherando placed second with a score of 281.

The Region II Theatre Festival is scheduled for Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Broad Run High School.

 
 

Northwestern District Cheer Tournament Results

10/29/07
Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they swept the Northwestern District cheer season with a first place finish at the District Cheer Tournament. The Tigers, who scored 250.0, were followed by the Sherando Warriors with 221.0 points, the James Wood Colonels with 204.5 points, and the Millbrook Pioneers with 201.5 points.

The Tigers gained the automatic berth into the Region II Cheer Tournament by winning the NWD Regular Season title. The remaining three spots were earned by the Sherando Warriors, the James Wood Colonels, and the Millbrook Pioneers by virtue of their finish at the NWD Tournament.

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they swept the top honors at the Northwestern District Cross Country Meet on Thursday, October 25, 2007. Brentsville took home the top spot in both the Boys & Girls Team competitions. James Wood's Josh Wilson took the top boys spot and Millbrook's Presley Parkes took the top girls spot.

The Region II Meet will also be held at Kernstown Battlefield. The meet will be run on Saturday, November 3, 2007. The Girls Race will begin at 2:00 followed by the Boys race at 2:45.

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they took 1st place at the second NWD Mini Cheer Tournament of the season. By taking 1st in both Mini Tournaments, Brentsville claims the NWD Regular Season Cheer Title and an automatic berth into the Region II Tournament.

Rounding out the top three spots for Mini #2 were the Sherando Warriors in 2nd place and the John Handley Judges in 3rd place.

The next meeting of the NWD teams will be at Brentsville for the NWD Tournament. The tournament will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 6:00.

 
 

Colonels & Pioneers Claim NWD XC Titles

Congratulations to the James Wood Colonels Boys XC Team and the Millbrook Pioneers Girls XC Team as they are this season's Regular Season Varsity XC Champions. Both teams have now earned an automatic berth into their respective Region II Meets.

Rounding out the top four boys teams are Sherando, Millbroo, & Warren Co. This is Millbrook's 2nd girls title. Rounding out the top 4 girls teams are Sherando, James Wood, & Brentsville.

The Northwestern District Meet will be held at Kernstown Battlefield on Thursday, October 25, 2007. The girl's race will begin at 3:45 with the boys following at 4:15.

 
 

Sherando Warriors Capture District Tournament Title

9/17/07
The Sherando Warriors captured this year's Northwestern District Tournament Title. The Warriors(320) were led by NWD Player of the Year Casey Thompson(68) and All-NWD Golfer Alex Smart(76). The John Handley Judges (331) came in second, but the Millbrook Pioneers kept their season alive by taking the Regular Season Title, which secured a spot for them at the Region II Golf Tournament. The Pioneers(334) were led by All-District Golfer, Trevor Oyler(76). The Warriors and the Pioneers will send their top six(6) golfers to the Region II Tournament to be played at Brambleton Golf Course on Tuesday, October 2, 2007. Start time is 9:00am.

Other region II qualifiers are Central's Derek Snarr (All-NWD, 72), Skyline's Ryan Rhettburg (All-NWD, 73), John Handley's Bren Ahrnsbrak (77), Brentsville's Jordan Willer (78), James Wood's Mike McIntyre (81), and Central's Geoff Hamilton (81). Brentsville's James mitchell(82) will be this year's Region II alternate.

The Northwestern District Coach of the Year is Millbrook's Nate Hill.

 
 

Millbrook Pioneers Claim NWD Golf Title

Congratulations to the Millbrook Pioneers as they captured the Northwestern District Golf Title. The Brentsville Tigers finished the regular season in second with John Handley, Sherando, and James Wood placing third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Skyline, Central, and Warren Co. finished the regular season sixth, seventh and eigth, respectively. The NWD Golf Tournament will be played on Monday, September 17 at Shenvalee with a start time of 9:00 am.

 
 

District Football Champion Crowned and Regional Playoffs Set

10/12/06
Congratulations to the Sherando Warriors as the claim the Northwestern District Football Championship and an automatic berth into the Region II - Division 4 playoffs. The Warriors' rating of 26.90 earns them the #1 seed in Region II - Division 4 and gets them home field throughout the Region II playoffs. The Warriors will host #4 Harrisonburg in the first round of the playoffs. The game will be played on Friday, November 17, 2006 at 7:30.

The Northwestern District will also send the John Handley Judges & Brentsville Tigers to the playoffs. With a rating of 21.1, the Judges will be the #2 seed in Region II - Division 3, and Brentsville, with a rating of 18.2, will be #4 seed in Region II - Division 3. The Judges will host #3 Rockbridge Co. on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 1:00. The Tigers will travel to #1 R.E. Lee(Staunton) on Friday, November 17, 2006. Game time will be 7:30.

The other matchups this year are Dulles District Champion and #2 seed Park View vs. Jefferson District Champion and #3 seed Louisa Co.. These games will be played on Friday, November 17, 2006 at 7:30.

 
 

Northwestern District Volleyball Tournament Results

Congratulations to the Sherando Warriors on capturing their second straight Northwestern District Tournament Championship. The #2-seeded Warriors upset #1 James Wood by a score of 3-0 at James Wood on Thursday, November 2, 2006. Both teams will advance to the Region II Volleyball Tournament.

The Colonels are the #1 seed in the Region and will host the Jefferson District #2 at James Wood. The Warriors will travel to Jefferson District Champion W. Albemarle. Both matches will be played on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 7:00PM.

 
 

Region II Cheer Results

Congratulations to the Liberty Eagles and Brentsville Tigers on advancing to the Group AA State Cheer Competition. The Eagles placed 2nd to Region II Champion Potomac Falls(245, 248) with scores of 238.5 for Round 1 and 246.0 for round 2. The Tigers finished in 4th place with scores of 222.0 and 212.5.

The Group AA State Competition will be held at the Seigel Center on the campus of VCU in Richmond on Saturday, November 11, 2006.

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they swept the top honors at the Northwestern District Cross Country Meet on Thursday, October 26, 2006. Brentsville took home the top spot in both the Boys & Girls Team competitions. The Tigers also took home the top individual spots as Adam Henken and Becky Stewart came in first in each race.

The Region II Meet will also be held at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville. The meet will be run on Friday, November 3, 2006. The Girls Race will begin at 1:00 followed by the Boys race at 1:45.

 
 

Colonels Take NWD Volleyball Title

10/23/06
Congratulations to the James Wood Colonels as they captured the 2006 NWD Regular Season Volleyball Title with a perfect 14-0 district record. Along with the regular season title, the Colonels have gained the automatic berth into the Region II Volleyball Tournament and will host a first round match.

The Colonels were followed by last year's NWD Champion Sherando Warriors in 2nd. Brentsville and Liberty finished in a tie for 3rd, but Brentsville won the coin toss to become the #3 seed and Liberty will be the #4 seed in the NWD Tournament. James Wood will host #8 John Handley, Sherando will host #7 Warren Co., Brentsville will host #6 Central, and Liberty will host #5 Millbrook.

The first round of the NWD Volleyball Tournament will begin on Wednesday, October 25, 2006. All start times will be 7:00pm.

Congratulations to the Liberty Eagles as they took 1st place at the second NWD Mini Cheer Tournament of the season. By taking 1st in this tournament and 2nd in Mini #1, Liberty also claims the NWD Regular Season Cheer Title and an automatic berth into the Region II Tournament.

Handley Cheer Challenge Results

Congratulations to the Northwestern District Cheer Squads as they dominated the 2006 Handley Cheer Challenge. Lead by the Sherando Warriors(238.5) in 2nd place, the NWD placed all seven participating teams in the top 9. Following the Warriors were Liberty(230) in 3rd, Millbrook (215) in 4th, James Wood(208) in 6th, Central(201.5) in 7th, John Handley(199) in 8th, and Warren Co.(198) in 9th place.

The next meeting of the NWD teams will be at John Handley for the 1st NWD Mini-Tournament of 2006. The tournament will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at 7:00.

 
 

Sherando Warriors Sweep Northwestern District

The Sherando Warriors swept this year's Northwestern District team honors by capturing the Northwestern District Tournament Title. The Warriors(313) were led by Alex Smart(76), Daniel Beatty(77), and Casey Thompson(77). The Millbrook Pioneers kept their season alive by taking second place at the District Tournament, which secured a spot for them at the Region II Golf Tournament. The Pioneers(317) were led by District Medalist, Wes Licklider(72) and trevor Oyler(77). By taking the top two team spots at the District Tournament, the Warriors and the Pioneers will send their top six(6) golfers to the Region II Tournament to be played at Lakeview Golf Course on Tuesday, October 3, 2006. Start time is 9:00am.

Other region II qualifiers are John Handley's Bren Ahrnsbrak(73), Warren Co.'s Ryan Rettburg(74), Central's Derek Snarr(77), James Wood's Bryce Moore(76), Central's Cory Hunt(80), and Warren Co.'s Tyler Jenkins(80).

The Northwestern District Player of the Year is Sherando's Casey Thompson, and the Coach of the Year is Sherando's Rob Wright.

 
 

Sherando Warriors Claim NWD Golf Title

Congratulations to the Sherando Warriors as they captured their second Regular Season Varsity Golf Title in three years. The Millbrook Pioneers finished the regular season in second with Central, John Handley, and James Wood placing thrid, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Brentsville and Warren Co. finished the regular season in a tie for sixth with the Liberty Eagles finishing in eighth place. The tie between BDHS & WCHS will be broken during the NWD Golf Tournament, which will be played on Monday, September 18 at Rock Harbor with a start time of 9:00 am.

 
 

Millbrook Takes First Mini #4

This time it was around, it was Millbrook taking a mini-tournament from Sherando. The Pioneers took mini-tournament #4 by a score of 319 to 327 over the Warriors. Coming in at third was Brentsville with a score of 331.

The top individual golfers on the day were Central's Cory Hunt(72) and Sherando's Casey Thompson(75).

The next NWD action will be on Monday, August 28, 2006 when Liberty, Sherando, & Warren Co. compete in a tri-match at Shenandoah GC. Start time is 4:00.

 
 

Sherando Leads NWD at Bryan Gunter Tournament

8/18/06
Sherando, again, held the top NWD spot in a tournament. This time at the Bryan Gunter Tournament held at Rock Harbor. At the close of the two-day tournament, the Warriors(661) finished 3rd behind Oakton(AAA) and Lake Braddock(AAA). John Handley(665) was 4th while Millbrook(670) lost a tie-break to West Springfield(AAA) to finish 6th. The top individual NWD golfer of the tournament was Millbrook's Wes Licklider who shot a 157 which was good enough for 3rd.

 
 

Sherando Takes Golf Mini-Tournament #3

8/16/06
Led by Alex Smart (73) & Casey Thompson(76), Sherando, again, held off Millbrook to claim their second Northwestern District Mini-Tournament of the season. For the day, Sherando shot 319 with Millbrook shooting 326 followed by John Handley with 330. By shooting a 73, Sherando's Alex Smart took the top individual spot followed by a three-way tie at second between Central's Cory Hunt, Millbrook's Trevor Olyer, & Sherando's Casey Thompson.

The next appearance by NWD Golfers will be in the annual Bryan Gunter Tournament at Rock Harbor and the Combs Cup at Bull Run both of which will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2006.

Sherando and Millbrook again were competing for the top NWD spot. This time at the Curly Licklider Tournament held at the Shenandoah GC. The Warriors(320), who finished 4th behind Forest Park(AAA), Potomac Falls, both shot 317, and Loudoun Valley(AAA)who shot 319. Millbrook(323) finished 8th, John Handley(329) was 11th. The top individual NWD golfer of the day was Millbrook's Wes Licklider who shot a 76 which was good enough for a tie at 3rd.

Led by Casey Thompson(76) & Daniel Beatty(78), Sherando held off Wes Licklider(74) & Millbrook by four strokes to claim Mini-Tournament #1 which was played at the Winchester CC. For the day, Sherando shot 319 with Millbrook shooting 323 followed by James Wood with 352. By shooting a 74, Millbrook's Wes Licklider took the top individual spot followed by Sherando's Casey Thompson who shot a 76.

The next Mini-Tournament will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at Shenvalee. The next appearance by NWD Golfers will be in the annual Curly Licklider Tournament which will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at the Shenandoah GC. The start time will be 9:00am.

 
 

Warren Co. Softball Receives Softball Sportsmanship Award

Every year at the conclusion of the regular season the Winchester Umpires Association presents a Good Sportsmanship Award to one softball team that they serve.

The softball recipient this year is the Warren County Varsity Softball Team. A plaque is currently being made for this program to recognize them for their excellent sportsmanship.

Congratulations to the John Handley Judges as they claimed the Northwestern District Track & Field Meet Championship with a team score of 152 points. Follwing the Judges were Sherando (107), Liberty (82), Brentsville (69), Millbrook (46), James Wood (28), Warren Co. (10), and Central (2).

Congratulations to the Warren Co. Wildcats as they claimed the NWD Regular Season Baseball Title after a thrilling one game playoff against the Sherando Warriors. The Wildcats edged the Warriors in the bottom of the 8th inning by a score of 6-5. The Wildcats finished with a district record of 11-3. With the regular season title, Warren Co. gains an automatic berth into the Region II Tournament.

The two teams will advance to the Region II Tournament. John Handley will be the #4 seed and play host to Jefferson District Runner-up & #5 seed Western Albemarle. The game will be played at 7:00 on Tuesday, February 21, 2006.

The two teams will advance to the Region II Tournament. John Handley will be the #4 seed and play host to Dulles District Runner-up & #5 seed Broad Run. The game will be played at 7:00 on Tuesday, February 21, 2006.

Central, the #7 seed, will travel to second seeded Loudoun Co. who won the Dulles District this year. That game will also begin at 7:00.

Region II Scholastic Bowl Results

Congratulations to the John Handley Judges as they took home 2nd place at the Region II Scholastic Bowl Tournament held at Park View High School on Wednesday, February 16, 2006. By taking 2nd place, the Judges will move on to the Group AA State Tournament to be held at The College of William & Mary on Saturday, February 25, 2006 with a start time TBA.

Also, congratulations to the James Wood Colonels who took 4th place at the Region II Tournament. James Wood made a strong showing by defeating eventual Region II Champion Charlottesville in the first round of last night's tournament, but later on, Charlottesville exacted its revenge and defeated James Wood in route to having to defeat Handley twice to claim the title.

Liberty High Wins Soccer Sportsmanship Awards

Liberty & Brenstville High Schools were honored to receive recognition from the Soccer Officials Association.

The Commonwealth Soccer Officials Association believes that High School Athletics are an important part of the education of High School students, and as officials, it is our job, along with the coaches, to act as role models and help instill sportsmanship in interscholastic sports. It is our job to ensure that contests are played according to the rules and that the competition is fair and safe. CSOA gives out annual sportsmanship awards to the best Boys and Girls programs as well as the best overall programs in the Region. To determine our winners, each game is rated for sportsmanship with both Junior Varsity and Varsity sportsmanship scores used to figure the winners in the various categories. This year’s Northern Regional winners were Wakefield for the Girls Program (Honorable mention Lee) and Woodson for the Boy’s Program (Honorable Mention TC Williams and Falls Church). The overall winner was Woodson (Honorable Mention TC Williams and Falls Church). This year’s Northwestern Region winners were Liberty for the Girls Program (Honorable Mention (Brentsville and North Stafford) and Liberty for the Boys (Honorable Mention Brentsville and North Stafford). Congratulations to Sherando as they won the annual City/County Co-ed Swim Meet on Saturday, December 3, 2005. Sherando finished with 120 points and just beat James Wood who scored 117 points. John Handley was close at 112 points, and Millbrook finished with 66 points.

 
 

Group AA Volleyball Results

Congratulations to the Sherando Volleyball team as they took 2nd at the Group AA Volleyball Championship on Saturday, November 19, 2005. Sherando dropped only their second match of the 2005 season to the newly-crowned 2005 Group AA Volleyball Champions - Cave Spring. The scores of the games were 25-17, 25-10, 25-17.

Sherando made its way to the Group AA Final by defeating Region I Champion Jamestown 3-0 at Jamestown on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 and, in a rematch of the Region II Final, Sherando defeated Region II Champion Waynesboro 3-2 at Cave Spring on Friday, November 18, 2005.

The Warriors finished the season with a 27-2 record in match play, and their record for individual games was 81-16.

 
 

Group AA Cross Country Meet Results

11/14/05
Congratulations to the Boys and Girls teams from Brentsville as they captured the Group AA State Team Titles at the Group AA State Meet held on Saturday, November 12, 2005 at Great Meadow. The Northwestern District also featured the Sherando Warrior Boys who took home third place and the John Handley Girls who took home fourth place in the team competitions.

In the boys race, Region II dominated the field by claiming the top four teams spots and boasted ten out of fifteen All-State Runners. The Northwestern District took home five of those All-State spots. The district field was led by juniors Henry Melius(3) and Adam Henken(4th) of Brentsville followed by senior Levi Watson(7th) of Sherando, junior Ryan Witt(8th) of Sherando, and Region II Champion, senior Nick Ghelsen(14th) of Brentsville. The Boys Group AA Champion was Griff Graves of Abington High School out of Region IV.

In the Girls race, Region II claimed four of the top seven spots in the team competition and earned seven of the fifteen All-State individual spots. The four Northwestern District All-State runners were led by Region II Champion, junior Becky Stewart of Brentsville who finished second to Group AA Champion, junior Catherine White of Northside High School out of Region III. Completing the Northwestern District All-State field were junior Jillian Pollack(5th) of Millbrook, sophomore Amelia Emerson(9th) of Brentsville, and senior Erin Bender(15th) of John Handley.

Region II Volleyball Tournament Results

Congratulations to the Sherando Volleyball team as they took 2nd at the Region II Championship on Saturday, November 12, 2005. The Warriors dropped their lone match this season to an undefeated Waynesboro team.

The Warriors will travel to Region I Champion Jamestown High School in Williamsburg on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 for the quarterfinal round of the Group AA Volleyball Tournament. The match will start at 7:00.

 
 

Region II Cheer Tournament Results

11/14/05
Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers. They are the 2005 Region II Cheer Champions with score of 267.5. The Liberty Eagles lost a tie breaker to the Spotswood Trailblazers and secured 3rd place and a berth into the Group AA Cheer Tournament. The Harrisonburg Bluestreaks claimed the final spot for the State Tournament. The Northwestern District #3 James Wood Colonels finished in 10th place.

The Group AA Cheer Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at the Siegel Center on the Campus of VCU in Richmond. The times for the doors to open are TBA. Check back here or the VHSL web site for updates.

 
 

District Football Champion Crowned and Regional Playoffs Set

Congratulations to the John Handley Judges as the claim the Northwestern District Football Championship and an automatic berth into the Region II - Division 3 playoffs. The Judges' rating of 23.6 earns them the #1 seed in Region II - Division 3 and gets them home field throughout the Region II playoffs. The Judges will host #4 Rockbridge Co. in the first round of the playoffs. The game will be played on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 1:00.

The Northwestern District will also send the Sherando Warriors to the playoffs. With a rating of 21.9, the Warriors will be the #3 seed in Region II - Division 4. They will travel to #2 Lousia Co. on Friday, November 18, 2005. Game time will be 7:30.

The other matchups this year are #3 R.E. Lee at #2 Turner Ashby in Division 3 and Dulles District Champion and #4 seed Park View at Valley District Champion and #1 seed Harrisonburg. Dates and times for these game have yet to be determined.

 
 

Region II Volleyball Tournament Update

Congratulations to the Sherando Warriors as they clinch a spot in the Group AA State Tournament by defeating a tough Western Albemarle Warrior squad by a score of 3-1. However, to secure a home match in the first round of the state playoffs, the Warriors would still have to defeat an undefeated Valley District Champion Waynesboro team in the Region II Final on Saturday, November 12, 2005. Start time will be 12:00 noon at Sherando.

Congratulations to the Sherando Warriors on capturing the Northwestern District Tournament Championship. The #1-seeded Warriors defeated #3 Liberty by a score of 3-1 at Sherando on Thursday, November 3, 2005. Both teams will advance to the Region II Volleyball Tournament.

The Warriors are the #1 seed in the Region and will host the Loudoun Co. Raiders at Sherando. The Liberty Eagles will travel to Dulles District Champion Heritage. Both matches will be played on Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at 7:00PM.

 
 

Northwestern District Cross Country Makes Strong Region II Showing

Once again, congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they dominated the Region II Meet by winning both the boys and girls races by large margins. Nick Ghelsen and Becky Stewart again led the Tigers by taking the Region II Individual Titles. The Brentsville Girls had 4 runners in the top 15 which earned these runners All-Region II honors. The Tiger Boys were powered by taking 3 of the top 4 spots.

In the boys race, the Tigers were followed by the NWD Regular Season Boys Champion Sherando Warriors, the John Handley Judges, and the James Wood Colonels. The 3rd place Warriors were led by Levi Watson's 2nd place finish and Ryan Witt's 11th place finish. By finishing in 3rd place, the Warriors earned a berth in the Group AA State Meet; the top four teams advance to the State Meet. The Judges of John Handley finished in 5th place, missing a Group AA berth to Valley District Champion Ft. Defiance. The top individual for the Judges was Clint Schiavone who missed joining the Group AA field by just under two seconds. Led by Sophomore Josh Wilson in 18th place, the James Wood Colonels finished 7th in the region. Sophomores Robert Vance(23) & Steven Lassiter(24) of Millbrook, senior Evan Ashby(32) of Liberty, & junior Daniel Arnold(52) of Warren Co. participated in the individual race for the boys.

In the girls race, Brentsville will be joined at the Group AA Meet by the NWD Regular Season Champion John Handley Judges who finished 3rd in the region. The Judges were led by two All-Region runners junior Anna Cote(8) & senior Erin Bender(9). The Liberty Eagles also just missed a berth into the State Meet by finishing 5th in the girls race. The Eagles were led by All-Region II runner Stephanie Giunta(10) who is a sophomore. The James Wood Colonels completed a strong Northwestern District showing by finishing 6th in the region. James Wood was led by senior All-Region II runner Stephanie Shenk(12). Both junior Jillian Pollack of Millbrook, who placed 6th, and freshman Mara Smith of Warren Co., who placed 15th, earned a spot at the State Meet. Millbrook freshman Sullivan Parkes also participated in the individual race and finished 24th.

The Group AA State Meet will be held at Great Meadow. The meet will be run on Saturday, November 12, 2005. The Girls Race will begin at 10:30 followed by the Boys race at 11:15.

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they swept the Northwestern District cheer season with a first place finish at the District Cheer Tournament. The Tigers, who scored 253.5, were followed by the Liberty Eagles with 251.0 points, and the James Wood Colonels with 231.5 points.

The Tigers gained the automatic berth into the Region II Cheer Tournament by winning the NWD Regular Season title. The remaining two spots were earned by the Liberty Eagles and the James Wood Colonels by virtue of their finish at the NWD Tournament.

Congratulations to the Brentsville Tigers as they swept the top honors at the Northwestern District Cross Country Meet on Thursday, October 27, 2005. Brentsville took home the top spot in both the Boys & Girls Team compeition. The Tigers also took home the top individual spots as Nick Gehlsen and Becky Stewart came in first in each race.

The Region II Meet will also be held at Great Meadow. The meet will be run on Thursday, November 3, 2005. The Girls Race will begin at 3:00 followed by the Boys race at 3:45.

 
 

Girls Open State Golf Tournament Results

Congratulations to Northwestern District Golfers Ashley Plaugher from Millbrook and Andrea Riddle from Sherando. There were 99 girls from the state that qualified to play and the field was trimmed to 72 after the first day. Ashley finished 60th and Andrea finished 61st.

The tournament was played at Independence Golf Course , home of the Virginia State Golf Association, in Richmond, Virginia. Dates of play were October 19 - 20.

The automatic qualifier from the Northwestern District is the NWD Regular Season Champion Brentsville Tigers. Each district is allowed three (3) qualifiers at the Region II Tournament. The Northwestern District will qualify Brentsville + 2 schools.

The Northwestern District qualifiers will be determined as follows:

If Brentsville wins the NWD Tournament, the 2nd and 3rd place schools will qualify for the Region II Tournament.
If Brentsville places 2nd at the NWD Tournament, the 1st and 3rd place schools will qualify for the Region II Tournament.
If Brentsville does not place 1st or 2nd at the NWD Tournament, the 1st and 2nd place schools will qualify for the Region II Tournament.

Warriors Capture District Volleyball Title

Congratulations to the Sherando Warriors as they claim the Northwestern District Title with their 3-1 win over James Wood. The victory assures the Warriors of the title by locking up the head-to-head tie breakers with both James Wood and Liberty. With the regular season title, the Warriors gain an automatic berth into the Region II Tournament and a first round region tournament home match.

Northwestern District Mini #1 Cheer Tournament Results

The host team Brentsville Tigers took the first District Mini of the 2005 season with 243 points. The Defending NWD Champion Liberty Eagles took second with 226.5 points. Rounding out the top three were the Defending NWD Tournament Champion Sherando Warriors who scored 226 points. Congratulations to all the teams of the Northwestern District, and we look forward to the next competition to be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at Liberty High School. The start time will be 8:00PM.

 
 

Boys & Girls District Cross Country Champs Named

With their victory over Millbrook yesterday, the Sherando Warriors claimed the Northwestern District Boys Cross Country title. The Warriors record for the season was 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the district. The John Handley Judges Girls Cross Country team claimed the Girls Title with a strong 2005 season. For the year, the Judges were 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the district.

Central Cheer Invitational

Five out of eight Northwestern District competition cheer teams competed at the Central Cheer Invitiational at Central High School in Woodstock. The Sherando Warriors placed first with a score of 227, Central placed third with a score of 190. The James Wood Colonels and the Millbrook Pioneers tied for fourth with 181 points.

 
 

Region II Golf Tournament Results

10/7/05
The Harrisonburg Blue Streaks of the Valley District took home the team and individual titles yesterday at the Region II Golf Tournament held at the Shenandoah Golf Club. Coming in second were the Jefferson District Champion Western Albemarle Warriors in the team competition. Elliot Wilson of Harrisonburg shared the Region II individual title with William Monroe's Mike Moyers.

Harrisonburg and Western Albemarle gain automatic berths into the Group AA State Tournament. Individually, the team members from Harrisonburg and Western Albemarle alogn with Mike Moyers of William Monroe, Grayson Hurt of John Handley, Greg Brouse of Heritage, Andrew Cypher of Loudoun Co., Whit Neuhauser of Monticello, Michael Pence of Spotswood, and Casey Thompson of Sherando will be moving on to the Group AA State Tournament.

The Group AA Golf Tourmament will be hosted by Graham High School. It will be held at the Fincastle Golf Club in Bluefield, VA on Monday and Tuesday, October 10-11, 2005. The start time will be 8:30am on Monday.

Due to circumstances beyond the control of the Northwestern District, the start times for both Cheerleading Mini-Tournaments on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Brentsville and Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at Liberty will change to 8:00 p.m. The start time for the Northwestern District Cheer Tournament at Millbrook on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 will remain the same at 7:00p.m.

 
 

Liberty's Stadler to Announce College Choice

Liberty High School will hold a press conference on Monday, October 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Eagle Room. At this time, Liberty High School Football Player Alex Stadler will announce which college or university he will attend to play football.

The Eagle Room is located very near the main office so please enter through the main entrance of the school.

There will not be an announcement from Alex or from Liberty until this time.

Handley Cheer Challenge

9/29/05
Six out of eight Northwestern District competition cheer teams competed at the Handley Cheer Challenge invitiational tournament at John Handley High School in Winchester. While all of the district teams showed well, the Sherando Warriors placed second with a score of 236, and the James Wood Colonels took third with a score of 219. The 2004 Group AA State Champion Stone Bridge Bulldogs, now Group AAA, took top honors with a score of 255.5.

Handley Takes NWD Golf Tournament Title

The John Handley Judges swept this year's Northwestern District team honors by capturing the Northwestern District Tournament Title. The Judges(316) were led by Grayson Hurt(74) and Brendan Ahrnsbrak(78). The Sherando Warriors kept their season alive by taking second place at the District Tournament, which secured a spot for them at the Region II Golf Tournament. The Warriors(323) were led by Casey Thompson(76) and Patrick Reiser(77). By taking the top two team spots at the District Tournament, the Judges and the Warriors will send their top six(6) golfers to the Region II Tournament to be played at Shenandoah Valley on Wednesday, October 6, 2005. Start time is 9:00am.

This year's District Medalist and automatic Region II Tournament qualifier is James Wood's Brad Mackie who shot a 73. Other top individual district honors went to Corey Hunt of Central High School.

Handley Captures Third Mini and District Golf Title

The Handley Judges took their third NWD Mini-Tournament of the season at Shenandoah Valley on Saturday, September 17, 2005. With the win, the Judges capture the Northwestern District Regular Season Championship. Led by Cory Claytor's 75, the Judges shot a Mini-Tournament best 310. Grayson Hurt(77), Brendan Ahrnsbrak(77), & Bobby Arthur(81) rounded out the top scorers for Handley. Sherando(318) finishes the regular season in second place with their second place finish at the final Mini of the season. Sherando's Patrick Reiser(75) led the Warriors and tied Handley's Claytor for the top individual spot of the day. Warren Co.'s Thomas Madden took the third individual spot with a 76 on the day.

The Northwestern District Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2005. It will be played at Shenandoah Valley with a start time of 9:00.

Central Closes Gap in Golf

Led by Derek Snarr's 75, Central High School closed the gap in both the team and individual standings by taking first in the fourth NWD Mini Golf Tournament at Carper's Valley on Saturday, September 10, 2005. Following Central in a tie for second were handley and Sherando - each shooting a 323. The top individual spot was taken by Handley's Grayson Hurt(70) for the second time this season followed by James Wood's Brad Mackie who shot a 73.

Liberty Alum Finishes 5th in NCAA XC Meet

On September 3, 2005, the Salem College Cross-Country Team started their inaugural season of NCAA Division III competition. At Campbell University they competed in a ten-team field of NCAA Division I, II, and III teams.

Freshman Rachel Fichthorn (first year, Nokesville, VA) finished in 5th place in the NCAA Division II/III race and finished ahead of 12 NCAA Division I harriers in the overall race. Her time of 17:30 in the 4000 meter race satisfied her some, but after the race, Rachel commented on how she enjoyed a 5k much better as many runners falter in the final mile.

Millbrook's Stewart to be Inducted into JHHS Hall of Fame

Current Millbrook Coordinator of Student Activities, Bill Stewart, will be inducted to John Handley High School's Hunter Maddox Hall of Fame at the Judges Hall of Fame Game versus Heritage High on Saturday, September 24, 2005.

Mr. Stewart was a 1975 graduate of John Handley High School. During his prep career, Mr. Stewart was an All-State Cross Country and Track Athlete.

James Wood's Mackie Stays Hot

For the third straight tournament, James Wood's Brad Mackie bested the field to claim the top individual golfer. This time around Mackie shot a two-day total of 142 with an incredible day one score of 69. John Handley remained focused on being the top team in the area. The Judges combined for a score of 628 which bested AAA Oakton by one stroke. All told, the Northwestern District faired well against other teams in the area by taking three of the top five team spots as well as three of the top five individual honors.

 
 

Handley Takes Second District Tourney of the Year

Led by Greyson Hurt's 79, John Handley bested the rest of the Northwestern District for the second time this year to claim Mini-Tournament #3 played at Kastle Greens. For the day, Handley shot 327 with Millbrook taking second with 332 followed by Brentsville with 333. The top individual spot was claimed, for the second time this year, by James Wood's Brad Mackie who shot a 75 followed by Liberty's Hunter Pearson who shot a 77.

The next Mini-Tournament will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at Carpers Valley.

NWD Teams Take Six of Top Ten Spots at Licklider Tourney

Northwestern District teams took six of the top ten spots at Thursday's Curley Licklider Inivitational. Liberty placed 11th, with James Wood and Warren Co.'s tie at 9th beginning the top ten finishes by the NWD. Brentsville finished 8th with Millbrook finishing 6th behind Fauquier's(AAA) 5th place finish. John Handley finished one stroke behind Stone Bridge(AAA) to place 4th. The top District team of the day was Sherando who placed 2nd behind Tournmament Champion Albemarle(AAA). The Northwestern District also took three of the top five individual spots. The top individual golfer of the day was James Wood's Brad Mackie who shot a 72 followed by Albemarle's Joe Mileur(73). John Handley's Greyson Hurt lost in a playoff to Albemarle's Daniel Haugh; both shot a 74. The top five was rounded out by John Handley's Cory Claytor(76).

 
 

Sherando Takes Golf Mini-Tournament

Patrick Reiser, Ben Rhodes, Daniel Beatty, and Grant Meeker all shot 79 to lead the Warriors to their first win of the season in the 2nd Northwestern District Mini-Tournament played at Rock Harbor. The top individual honors went to James Wood's Brad Mackie(73) followed by John Handley's Greyson Hurt(74), Central's Derek Snarr(75), and Millbrook's Jeremy Hahn(76). The next event featuring Northwestern District teams will be the Curley Licklider Inivitational to be held on Thursday, August 11, 2005 at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.

 
 

Handley Nudges Central in Golf Mini-Tournament

Led by Greyson Hurt's 71, John Handley held off Central by a single stroke to claim Mini-Tournament #1 which was played at the Winchester CC. For the day, Handley shot 312 with Central shooting 313 followed by Sherando with 324. By shooting a 71, Handley's Greyson Hurt took the top individual spot followed by Central's Corey Hunt who shot a 73.

The next Mini-Tournament will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at Rock Harbor.
